Senior lecturer and senior research associate John Germaine was one of three invited speakers at the 13th George F. Sowers Symposium held at Georgia Tech, May 11. Germaine’s talk on “A Perspective on Geotechnical Laboratory Testing: The Details Matter” was on the bill with a talk by David Potyondy of Itasca Consulting Group on rock fracture modeling in nuclear waste isolation, and a talk by David Daniel of the University of Texas on lessons learned from the failure of levees during Hurricane Katrina. The symposium honors Sowers, a civil engineer and geologist, who was on the faculty of the Georgia Institute of Technology for 50 years.
