Master of Science in CEE Requirements
Master of Science Course Requirements
- 66 course units, at least 42 of which are graduate H-level units.
- To qualify for a degree with specification, at least 34 of these H-level units must be in civil and environmental engineering subjects.
- Transfer credit is limited to the equivalent of one MIT subject. An upper-level undergraduate subject (if not used for the undergraduate degree) may be transferred by petition.
Master of Science Thesis Requirement
- 24 thesis units, minimum (1.ThG).
- S.M. Thesis Approval Form (available in the department's Academic Programs Office, Room 1-281). This form must be submitted by the end of the fifth week of the term in which the student first registers for Thesis (1.ThG).
- If an out-of-department advisor is selected, a thesis reader from CEE must sign the S.M. Thesis Approval Form and the title page of the completed thesis.
- Please visit the M.S.T. section of our website for information on the thesis requirements for that program.
Leaders for Global Operations Dual S.M./M.B.A. Program Requirements
Leaders for Global Operations (LGO) students who are admitted to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering are required to work toward the designated degree of Master of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering (S.M. CEE).
The S.M. CEE degree requires a minimum of 66 graduate units, of which at least 42 are from "H" level subjects and the remainder are from "G" level subjects. Of the 42 "H" level units, at least 36 must be in civil and environmental engineering, that is, from subjects beginning with 1.xx in the MIT Course Bulletin.
The subjects making up the 36-unit CEE requirement must satisfy the following restrictions:
- Option 1 (General CEE): Subjects that define a cohesive concentration area in CEE. If a subject is jointly listed with Course 15 or ESD, then only half of its units count towards the 36-unit requirement;
- Option 2 (Track in Energy and the Environment): Subject 1.818J, plus two subjects from the following list: 1.714, 1.72, 1.725, 1.731, 1.811, and 1.85;
- Option 3 (Track in Transportation): Subjects 1.200J and 1.201J, plus one subject from the following list: 1.202J, 1.203J, 1.212J, 1.231J, 1.252J, and 1.258J.
The CEE component of the academic program must be approved by the Graduate Officer of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. In addition, an acceptable thesis of at least 24 units is required. The thesis must be related to some aspect of civil or environmental engineering. A two-page proposal with emphasis on the CEE contents of the work must be submitted for approval to the Graduate Officer of CEE. If the primary thesis supervisor is not from CEE, then the student must select a CEE faculty member to serve as thesis reader.
