Dynamic Transportation Management SystemDynamic Transportation Management System

Professor Moshe Ben-Akiva's Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) research group has developed DynaMIT-a dynamic transportation management system-to address complex traffic control and management issues. The research group tested the system in in the South Park area of downtown Los Angeles (Sep. 2005 to Jan. 2006), by integrating DynaMIT with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation's Adaptive Traffic Control System. In the case study, DynaMIT used both offline (historical) and online (surveillance) data to estimate the state of the traffic network every 5 minutes and to predict travel time, up to 30 minutes in the future. DynaMIT has also been used by the City of Boston for emergency evacuation planning for the City of Boston. The image above shows a screenshot of Boston-area traffic taken from a previous version of a traffic simulator called MITSIM, which was also created by Ben-Akiva's ITS group.
