Master of Engineering
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering's Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) is a nine-month program that provides a practice-oriented education. Designed for people with a bachelor's degree in engineering (or related field) who want to enter or return to professional practice, the program prepares students for real-world engineering challenges. Our graduates routinely join leading engineering design firms, consulting companies and government agencies. Some go on to pursue a Ph.D.
M.Eng. students specialize in one of four tracks:
- Environmental and Water Quality Engineering
- Geotechnology
- High-Performance Structures
- Transportation
Regardless of which track they're in, all students have a choice of yearlong team projects-a feature that distinguishes MIT's M.Eng. program from those of other schools. Students work on real engineering projects—many of which come from MIT faculty research and consulting work—beginning with conceptualization and leading to detailed design.
Group projects provide:
- A chance to apply your course work to a real engineering problem
- Significant design experience
- Travel for fieldwork or a study tour in January (groups have recently visited Ghana, Honduras and the United Kingdom)
- Experience as a member of a working group of professionals
Supportive environment
The M.Eng. program also offers a supportive environment that facilitates friendships—beginning with a Labor Day retreat and built through teamwork with fellow students and MIT faculty members. M.Eng. students also have the opportunity to network with top engineers from some of the world's best engineering firms, many run by MIT alumni. Our graduates gain access to the best jobs in the field through MIT faculty and alumni.
Weekly seminars
The M.Eng. weekly Friday noon seminar provides a way for students to hear from their peers about their own research and from industry experts. To see upcoming seminars, visit the CEE Events section.
Admission Requirements
Admission requirements are similar to those for the Master of Science degree program, except that applicants must have obtained a bachelor's degree in civil or environmental engineering or a related field. Please see the CEE admissions page. Strong verbal skills are expected. Preference is given to candidates with demonstrated interest in professional practice careers.
Due to the heavy subject load, financial assistance in the form of research assistantships and teaching assistantships is generally not available for M.Eng. candidates. A number of partial-tuition fellowships are awarded on merit, and we expect to be able to increase this number for the upcoming year.
