Program Educational Objectives

The MIT Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering undergraduate degree program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (www.abet.org), and our Program Educational Objectives and Student Outcomes, listed below for the Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) program, are consistent with the requirements of ABET.  They were developed as part of our latest curriculum revision, which began in 2013.

The mission of MIT is to advance knowledge and educate students in science, technology, and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the nation and the world in the 21st century.

Educational Objectives

The educational objectives were developed as part of the program’s ongoing efforts to maintain through innovation an undergraduate program that meets the needs of our constituents. The current educational objectives of the undergraduate program are:

  1. Graduates will become principals in the industries associated with engineering and professional engineers starting-up and growing their own new firms. They will become recognized experts working in government, consulting firms, and international organizations around the country and around the world addressing some of the most challenging problems of our times.
  2. Graduates will become leading researchers and professors who create and disseminate new knowledge in engineering.
  3. Graduates will pursue lifelong learning, such as graduate work and other professional education.
  4. Graduates will be leaders, both in their chosen profession and in other activities

Student Outcomes

Undergraduates in the Civil and Environmental Engineering 1-ENG major will have attained the following outcomes by graduation. Students will have the ability to:

  1. Identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
  2. Apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
  3. Communicate effectively with a range of audiences 
  4. Recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
  5. Function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
  6. Develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
  7. Acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.​
