MIT Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering announces faculty promotions
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is pleased to announce the following faculty promotions:
Josephine Carstensen has been promoted to Associate Professor without Tenure effective July 1, 2024. Professor Carstensen received her B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark, and her M.S.E and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. Her research focuses on the new opportunities arising as digitalization of design and manufacturing is transforming the way we create the built environment. The Carstensen group develops and evaluates new design methods and tools that use structural mechanics and topology optimization to advance the design of more sustainable structures.
Cathy Wu has been promoted to Associate Professor without Tenure effective July 1, 2024. Professor Wu received her B.S. and M.Eng from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley. Her research is at the intersection of machine learning, optimization, and large-scale societal systems. Her current focus is on mixed autonomy systems in mobility, which studies the complex integration of connected and automated vehicle technologies, such as self-driving cars, into existing urban systems. Her research group also develops computational tools to enable reliable decision-making for critical societal systems.
