The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is pleased to announce the following faculty promotions effective July 1, 2026:

Michael Howland has been promoted to the rank of Associate Professor without Tenure. Howland received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University and M.S. and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University. Howland studies environmental fluid mechanics and the modeling, optimization, and control of renewable and efficient energy systems. His work is at the intersection of fluid mechanics, weather and climate modeling, uncertainty quantification, and optimization and control with an emphasis on renewable energy systems.

Benedetto Marelli has been promoted to the rank of Full Professor. Marelli received his B.Eng. (2005) and M.Sc. (2008) in Biomedical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano and PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from McGill University in 2011. Marelli’s research group works in the area of biopolymers, biopreservation, food, and agriculture. By using biofabrication strategies, the research group designs bio-inspired materials that work at the biotic/abiotic interface to prevent or mitigate environmental impact. He also serves as the Director of the Wild Cards Mission in the MIT Climate Project.
