On May 19, CEE Professor Sussman gave a lecture entitled, “The Amtrak Accident on the Northeast Corridor: A Systems Perspective.” An expert in the field of high-speed rail, Sussman engaged the audience in this informal seminar with a timely discussion on the Northeast Corridor Amtrak derailment that occurred on Tuesday, May 12. The systems approach to studying the derailment was advocated in Sussman’s talk. He urged the audience not to jump to an “obvious” cause of the derailment without considering the broader systems view. For the video of his lecture, please see here.
