Graduate student Jane Chui won an Outstanding Student Paper Award in hydrology at the American Geophysical Union’s Fall Conference in San Francisco in December 2014. The paper, “Interface Evolution during Radial Miscible Viscous Fingering,” describes how when a less viscous fluid replaces a more viscous one, the less that vary in size and shape to create complex patterns. The interface created from these patterns affects mixing between the two fluids, making it important to understand for applications such as enhanced oil recovery and microfluidics.
