Professor Martin Polz and postdoctoral associate Kathryn Kauffman have discovered a new type of virus that is representative of the uncharacterized majority of viruses in the ocean. Named Autolykiviridae after a character from Greek mythology who was storied for being difficult to catch, these viruses were previously undetected because of their unusual properties that are not detected in common laboratory techniques. The paper was published in Nature. Read more on MIT News.
