Exploration of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, for shale gas and the excavation technique’s rapid growth over the past decade in the U.S. and Western Canada will be the topic of discussion in the 2015 John R. Freeman Lecture on Thursday, April 9. With an emphasis on groundwater issues, Distinguished Emeritus Professor from the University of Waterloo Dr. John Cherry will address the uncertainties surrounding the shale gas debate, the claim that shale gas is an environmental experiment and the validity of the evidence put forth to support this theory. The lecture will begin with a reception at 6 pm in MIT’s Tang Center (E51). See here for more information.
