CEE Professor Emeritus Robert Whitman dies at 84

Robert WhitmanLongtime CEE Professor Robert V. Whitman S.M. ’49, Sc.D. ’51, died February 25 at age 84. A world-renowned geotechnical engineer and expert on earthquakes, he was with CEE from 1948 until his retirement in 1993, except for two years spent in military service. He remained an active member of the MIT community for many more years as a professor emeritus. Whitman is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betsy, two daughters and four grandchildren. Another daughter predeceased him. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., March 1, at the Church of Our Redeemer in Lexington.
