Professor Martin Polz and postdoctoral associate Kathryn Kauffman have discovered a new type of virus that is representative of the uncharacterized majority of viruses in the ocean. Named Autolykiviridae after a character from Greek mythology who was storied for being difficult to catch, these viruses were previously undetected because of their unusual properties that are not detected in common laboratory techniques.
