The cover of the May 2010 special issue of The Proceedings of the IEEE on “Remote Satellite Sensing: Monitoring Water, Carbon and Global Climate Change” features an artist’s rendition of the satellite in NASA’s Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission. CEE’s Professor Dara Entekhabi is the Science Team Leader for SMAP, which will measure the moisture in the Earth’s surface soil and areas of frozen and thawed soil, measurements that will improve the numerical modeling of weather prediction and climate projection. The mission is expected to launch in 2014 or 2015.
