Assistant Professor Pedro Reis has been promoted to associate professor without tenure, effective July 1, 2014. Reis works in mechanics of solids and structures, with an emphasis on instabilities associated with thin objects, such as thin films or 2-D materials, including shells. While conventionally, instabilities are regarded as a first step towards failure, Reis uses mechanical instabilities as a means of exploiting new functionalities over a wide range of length scales.
