Traffic tunnel at nightProfessor Moshe Ben-Akiva and his research group, the MIT Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Program, received the IEEE ITS Outstanding Applications Award for creation of DynaMIT, a computer system designed to provide real-time information to travelers and traffic managers. This work began in the mid-1990s with the MITSIMLab traffic modeling and simulation system, which was used to test and refine the electronic monitoring and surveillance systems for Boston’s Big Dig. Ben-Akiva credits a long series of collaborators, including postdocs and students, whose work made development of the systems possible.
